An Entrepreneur’s Rise, Fall and Reckoning

Forged in Grit is the true story of a South African entrepreneur who built a manufacturing empire from a modest workshop, took it to the stock exchange, lost it all, and discovered what remained when the dust settled.

Set against the backdrop of South Africa’s manufacturing sector, the book chronicles the rise of William Tell from a small family business into a major industrial group. It explores the challenges of expansion, competition, debt, corporate governance, and the pressures that accompany rapid growth.

But this is more than a business story. It is a deeply personal account of ambition, adversity, family, failure, and redemption. Through triumphs and setbacks, Barry Lok reflects on the lessons learned from a lifetime spent building, leading, and rebuilding.

Honest, insightful, and unflinching, Forged in Grit offers a rare look inside the realities of entrepreneurship and the resilience required when everything is on the line.

“From a 30-square-metre workshop to a JSE-listed manufacturing group—one entrepreneur’s story of ambition, adversity and resilience.”
